Blue Wave Bracelet, My donation to Artists for Japan

A while ago I posted about a movement on Facebook, a group of artists raising money to help the victims of the recent Japanese earthquakes and tsunami. It's taken a lot of thought about which piece I wanted to donate. I really didn't think it would be so hard! So I decided on my "Blue Wave" Bracelet. The beautiful focal bead in the center reminds me of an island sitting right in the middle of the ocean...just like Japan.

I used Capri Blue iridescent Capri Blue seed beads for the bracelet base. Then I added the loops which create a wave like movement using Capri blue sz 11 seed beads and 12mm Metallic Capri Blue Bugle Beads. It sparkles like water, is very comfortable on the wrist, and has great movement. The clasp is a pretty matte finished glass flower bead centered with a (you guessed it!) Capri Blue Swarovski Crystal and seed bead. The closure loop is "stretchable" so it doesn't have to be so large to fit over the flower but stretches over it instead making it a bit more secure and leaves less of a gap at the ends. The bracelet is 7" long (not including the clasp) and sells for $70.00. Oh and by the way, ALL of the seed and bugle beads are Japanese! (See photos)

This is how it works...I post my bracelet here. You go to the Facebook page, look at the photos by category (bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc.) and let them know you want to purchase this bracelet. Give them a couple of days to get it categorized. They have a PayPal Account already set up. They notify me and I ship it to you for free! This is all set up in conjunction with the American Red Cross so we know the money is going where it is most needed.

Note: Before you purchase...these photos make the blue appear...well....blue...almost navy blue. It isn't but Capri Blue is a really hard color for me to capture and I don't know how it's going to show up on your screen. It is definitely more a blue-green or teal blue. 7000 Bracelets for Hope-The Path to Healing

I wanted so much to join my friend Lori Anderson in this Blog Hop for such a great cause. I promised to post about it here and participate in a dependable manner. I was supposed to post this yesterday. I've been feeling rather guilty that I missed the deadline. I broke my promise. Then I was reminded that the burdens of my failures are only temporary. After all, the reason my post is late was due to my own personal physical limitations...of which I have no control. At least my health issues have names, there are scientists actively working on treatments and looking for cures.

7000 Bracelets of Hope is a about supporting the families of those with rare illnesses that have no cure, few answers, and are just beginning the long and winding journey to healing. The bracelets made will be sent to The Global Genes Project and distributed to these families as a reminder that there is hope and to give them a touch of beauty in an otherwise dark and hopeless place. As the mother of a child with a rare genetic illness this was even more more important and closer to my heart than most of the projects I have participated in. I remember the years of wandering lost and alone, along with doctors and therapists who knew little more than I about what was happening to our child. At the time there were few studies being done, few treatment options and little hope of a any real future for our daughter.

When I heard the theme of these bracelets was blue...as in "Blue Gene" blue I knew immediately I wanted to use Sodalite beads but didn't happen to have any in my stash. I had been holding on to a gift certificate I'd received for Christmas for a bead shop, and thankfully I knew it would be there I could find the beads I needed for this project!

This is my contribution.....

I named this bracelet "The Journey to Healing". It's a long, winding journey, with loops and switchbacks, curves, ups and downs, and sometimes seems absolutely endless. But at the center of that journey is a circle of hope surrounding one life, one disease, one family. The journey, the search, the pain, the constant belief and prayers that around the next turn a diagnosis, a treatment, a cure WILL be found is worth it for someone you love...no matter how long it takes!

There are so many other jewelry artists who answered the call for this project! I was amazed at the numbers and frankly I was overwhelmed at the artistry and dedication to help those families they didn't know. I don't know those families either but I remember our personal journey and for that reason I want to thank all of these artists personally and especially Lori Anderson who suffers from a rare illness for starting this very special 7000 Bracelets of Hope Blog Hop! Thank You all so very much for caring!!

A Facebook friend who is also a wonderful jewelry artist and bead seller is helping with this awesome project through the American Red Cross. It's called Artists for Japan and all artists can help the needy in Japan by donating their work to the cause. Rings and Things Design Challenge

You know, every year has its ups and downs and for me the last couple of years have been mostly downs. But you don't want to hear about those!

One of the biggest "ups" has been Rings and Things. They have the greatest items, customer service and fun ways to win free stuff. I've been fortunate to be a winner a few times already so I had to share this latest Design Challenge! I really want these gorgeous copper beads!! Gift Certificate Goodies from the Bead Browsery

I received a Gift Certificate to The Bead Browsery, a local bead shop in my hometown. It's owned and operated by my friend Brenda MacLellan. She is an awesome designer, beader and an amazing wire artist so visiting her shop is always a drool fest!.

Anyway...my awesome husband took the time to find the shop and buy the gift certificate. It was a real surprise because a bead shop is not where he would normally shop :) For numerous reasons I will not expound on today, it has taken over a month to go shopping with my free money. Oh My Gosh!, it was so hard to choose what I wanted AND stay within my budget. But, I did pretty darn good and I love my new goodies so I wanted to share them with you.

She carries "Miner's Dollars", an item I've been lusting over for a long, long, long time. When I saw she had a new shipment of them in I just knew that was definitely one of the items I was going to put in my basket. Here it is...

This fellow is quite large and heavy as well so instead of trying to create a piece of jewelry with it I've decided to display it in a mini-plate rack for all to see and enjoy. It's quite a conversation piece! This isn't the best photo but it is covered in Pyrite and sparkles beautifully. I've been working for a while on my Viking Weave and needed a Draw Plate. Then I found a wonderful selection of beautiful blue Kyanite Tear Drop beads so I picked out a couple of sets to make earrings. One set for me, the other to sell ;) I'm also getting ready to work on a gift for friends and needed 26 gauge tarnish resistant Brass Wire and of course I knew Brenda would have that item in stock!

The last item I chose was a strand of Kyanite beads. Actually, I had no idea what they were! I purchased a pretty focal bead when the Gem and Mineral Show was in town back in the fall but the vendor couldn't tell me what kind of stone it was. I just hate that, don't you? Vendors should know what they are selling don'cha think?

When I asked around, none of my local friends could identify it. I even posted it on Face book and hoped for an answer but didn't received a single response! I just decided it really didn't matter as long as I liked it. Well I found a similar stone pendant at Brenda's shop and I asked her what kind of stone it was. It is Kyanite! Now when I think of Kyanite I think Blue or Green...certainly not Black! But yes, this is indeed Kyanite and if you get it in just the right light you can see the blues and greens deep inside the stone. Brenda just happened to have a marvelous strand of "Rough" or Black Kyanite beads that would look just scrumptious with my focal bead so they promptly found their way into my basket. Be sure to look at the photo below for a closer look. Won't they look just gorgeous wire wrapped into a chain for my focal bead?!

And then, sadly, I had to add up my purchases and I was just a tad over my gift certificate limit....but what the heck! I had cash on hand and went home feeling guilt free and satisfied with my new treasures :) I just love a good visit to my favorite bead shop. I should go more often! How often do you visit your local bead shop? I'd love to hear from you :)

ArtFire Collections sure make a Gal feel good!

I love ArtFire Collections :) When someone chooses one of my designs it feels good. When another artist includes one of my designs in a Collection, well, it make me feel GREAT! It's always an honor to be included with other artisans especially when you take into account just how many pieces they have to choose from...kind of mind boggling for me. (We all know it's not hard to "boggle" MY mind :)

I've been especially blessed and have had several pieces featured in ArtFire Collections. I know how very fortunate I am and honestly I hadn't really thought about sharing these "mini awards" here - on my Blog page until today. I don't know why exactly except I get SO excited when it happens and I start doing my happy dance. Then my brain goes on hold and I can't figure out how to do anything but post it on my Face book page or tweet about it - they have buttons right there on the page to make it simple for those of us not-so-computer-literate artists. And that's another thing...I still feel weird using the word "artist" or "designer" when referring to myself! I'm just me. Good old what you see is what you get Adrienne. Maybe that's why these little pats on the back, from people I truly respect, mean so much :) Anyway, I hope you'll go visit the links and take it all in. The BEST way to sell Jewelry...Separates or Sets?

This is and has been a conundrum of sorts for me and I assume many other jewelry artisans. How would my customers prefer to buy jewelry? I used to sell all matching pieces in a set but it seemed I was constantly getting requests to purchase only one or two items in a set. I changed my listing strategy and started offering matching pieces but everything was sold separately. If a customer bought two or more items from a matched set I offered discounted shipping and/or a discount on the purchase of those items.

However, this morning I had a little discussion with some of my Facebook friends and asked for their input. In today's economy I would have assumed they would prefer to buy items separately but much to my surprise they preferred to buy in sets! The reasons...the "complete look" and convenience - not having to shop around for matching pieces.

I've also had people tell me they don't like to buy "matchy matchy" jewelry. They preferred a more freestyle appearance, items that worked well together but weren't an exact match. Now I'm completely confused!!

I make a lot of necklaces and bracelets. I also make a lot of earrings that would match them but I haven't been selling them as sets. Why? Because I may create two or even three entirely different styles of earrings that would "match" the necklace or earrings. It seems, in the world of jewelry, there are as many different approaches to shopping and buying as there are styles available for sale. I want to give my customers options. I want to give them variety. I want to make my jewelry affordable and guilt free!

For example, this is a necklace I created using a carved Pink and Brown Stripe Jasper Leaf as the focal piece.

I used a medium weight Sterling Silver Rolo chain to connect the various wire wrapped bead sections. The "sections" included: Wood and Bali beads, Lodolite Quartz and Rose Quartz, and the last sections were made up of single gemstone beads with double extender chains. The "S" style clasp is handmade and hammered Sterling Silver.

This necklace can either be all about a natural, earthy look or all about classic elegance. Knowing I needed to be able to meet the needs of either style I made two pair of earrings to match giving my customers a choice of styles.

The first, a pair of Wood and Bali Bead drop earrings on Bali Silver headpins. I used the same wood beads used in the necklace. They are more casual. A very simple, earthy, and light weight design.

Then I designed a second pair of earrings. These are gemstone earrings. I combined Lodolite Quartz beads and Rose Quartz with Bali beads suspended from the same Sterling Silver Rolo Chain used in the necklace. The ear wires are Bali Silver. Handmade sterling silver coiled headpins add a touch of artisan elegance. These earrings are definitely more dressy.

Which brings me back to my original question....Separates or Sets? Which pair would you sell with the necklace in a set? Or...would you sell the earrings separately so the customer can choose the earrings of THEIR choice?

I have yet to list these items simply because I can't quite figure out how to market them. I would really like to hear from you..ALL of you! If you're a seller, I'd love to get your take on the subject. More importantly if you are a past, current, or a potential customer. I want to hear from YOU! How would you prefer to buy this jewelry? Sets or Separates?

Oh heck! I know I'm over-thinking this...Maybe I should offer both pair of earrings and the necklace as a set! Just think, you could wear the necklace with blue jeans and a t-shirt AND with a classic sheath dress or suit. A complete range of style and all you have to do is change the earrings... (and of course your shoes :)

Chrissy Marie has a brand new Artfire Studio!

Hammered Copper and Sterling Silver Circle Earrings

Well, I finally did it! I started a separate new Studio for my Chrissy Marie line of jewelry and accessories. I started off on ArtFire combining both lines of jewelry but I think it was a bit confusing. Chrissy Marie is my daughter and this line is dedicated to her. It's all about being young at heart, trendy, spirited, and super affordable.

If you keep up with this blog at all you know that we, as a family, truly believe in Equine Assisted Therapy (Also called Hippo therapy or Therapeutic Riding). Chrissy started riding with a local group several years ago and could hardly function socially and mentally. Soon after she began riding we saw amazing progress! Over the years we have been astounded at the progress she made and the young woman she has become. Unfortunately the group she rode with moved outside of our area but a new program was born to replace it. Chrissy will now be riding as an advanced rider in special shows and rodeos as well a volunteering in the program as a trained Horse Handler and Side Walker.

Back in May I began riding in an experimental Equine Assisted Therapy program to see if riding more often would have a bigger or more long lasting effect on disabled riders. It was an amazing experience and even more amazing....Chrissy assisted as my Horse Handler and Side Walker! We've switched roles :)

Unfortunately, due to an extremely wet, hot summer I had to give up riding for a few months. I have a "broken" internal thermostat and take medication that does not allow me to tolerate extreme heat. However I'm looking forward to getting back in the saddle again soon.

Run For the Roses Arabian Horse Magnet

Twenty-five percent of all sales from the Chrissy Marie shop will go to the new local Equine Assisted Therapy Program - "Better in the Saddle" aka "B.I.T.S." They are struggling a bit (no pun intended) to get up and running so I'm trying to help as much as I can. While some items are equine or horse related, most are not. Come see what I have in the Studio and check back often as I'll be adding new goodies as often as possible!

Can a Caterpillar Fringe Bracelet make you rich?

This is a photo of my current project, a custom ordered beaded fringe bracelet. It isn't finished yet but already I'm starting to second guess myself. I just hate it when that happens! Ahhh, the joys of custom jewelry design :)
My client wanted a piece in shades of deep blue with purple and lavender highlights. It's been a while since I made one of these and I'm just a bit apprehensive it won't be quite big enough. There may not be enough "play" due to the thickness of the fringe. Of course it doesn't help that my wrist is larger than my client's so I can't really try it on for size. I have a couple of adjustment ideas-just in case-but the truth is, I simply won't know for sure until she tries it on for size.
All in all, even if I have to restring every single bead my most important goal is having a customer who is completely satisfied with the purchase, the quality, and the service I provide. Unhappy customers seldom return and to my knowledge I don't have a single unhappy customer. If I do it's because I was never notified of a problem and I encourage any and all of my customers to let me know if there are any problems or concerns..ever! If it breaks, I'll repair it free of charge even if it's due to a weakness in or complete failure of a manufactured component. Maybe that's not the best approach if my goal is to get rich, but I never expected to get rich. Making loads of money was never my goal :)
In my skewed little world "rich" isn't about how much money I make. "Rich" is having earned the respect of my peers, building a reputation for creating unique designs with quality construction and offering the very best in customer service. Getting positive feedback is every bit if not more satisfying then any payment I receive. The money is a necessity. It's about having the freedom to purchase new goodies for my supply bin, restock the basics, and upgrade the tools of my trade. (Everyone knows you can never have too many tools!!)
Success is having a customer tell me their new "treasure" is worth every penny and exactly what they wanted...there's just nothing like it :)

I've been bad. I won these beautiful beads in a wonderful "give away" way back in February and meant to post them after I received them. Better late than never, right? I wanted to post pics of them but had trouble getting great photos. Well, here they are! The photo still doesn't do justice to the beads but take my word for it...they are gorgeous and fun!

Lisa Oram made these just for me :) I've been pondering how to use them. They are SO pretty and I could wear them with most anything in my closet! Just wanted to say "Thanks!" again and show them off.

I was sitting in my favorite chair today writing my post for this blog when I heard a Cardinal calling happily outside. If the backdoor is open I can see the fountain on my deck from here. I looked out and there, in one of the "cups" of my fountain was a large female Cardinal. She had decided to use the fountain rather than the birdbath! I wanted to get a photo of her but I just knew she'd fly away if I tried to get close enough for a "great" pic so I just took it from my armchair, across the room and through the backdoor. Not too bad considering the circumstances :) Kind of made me wonder....if she can fit in a little fountain cup, maybe, just maybe, I could fit in the birdbath! Nah, I don't think that's a good idea and I certainly wouldn't look as sweet :)

Wow! Time Flies......

It's been almost a month since my last post. They say time flies when you're having fun. It flies when you're not as well. It's been a tough summer here in Missouri with all the super high temperatures and RAIN! Not to complain, I'd rather have rain than drought but even my garden is starting to complain! For "Fibromites" (Fibromyalgia sufferers),those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME, and other chronic illnesses, the changing weather plays a huge role in what we can and cannot "do". Add a brain injury or two to the mix and well....let's just say I've been spending a lot of time in my chair with my laptop. Not the way I had planned to spend my summer!

"Summer Blues"

Since I've been stuck in the house most of the time, along with my daughter I'll tell you what she's been up to. Most of you know my daughter also has a brain injury along with a rare mental illness. She's twenty-one going on fourteen. There are many days when she inspires me and of course there are "those days" when we want to throttle each other :) Keeping this on the upside....she has suddenly decided to start using her jewelry design talents again! I recently posted a few of her new designs on my Face Book jewelry page but I wanted to share this photo of our latest collaborative effort. I absolutely love it!

Chrissy and I were helping a friend search for Vacation Bible School supplies at a local craft store when Chrissy came across this strand of wonderful Aqua glass beads. They were so pretty I just had to say "Yes" even though I didn't really think she'd ever use them. We spotted the strand of pretty Freshwater Pearl drops nearby. They are a deep bluish purple and of course we just had to add them to the basket :)

Chrissy surprised me with the design she created using the new beads and a few old beads she had in her personal stash. Most of them were not the best quality so I offered to let her go through my stash. She wanted something white, something clear, and definitely something Bali (her favorite spacer beads!)

She found a strand of White Swarovski Pearls,a strand of Aqua/Teal Freshwater Pearls and Bali Daisy Spacers. This necklace was starting to come together! She loves using crystal clear beads as well and I happened to think about a strand of gorgeous Faceted Quartz Crystal Rondelles she hadn't yet discovered. They are quite large but the faceting on the edges is just amazing! You might not even notice them until the light catches the faceted edge...then you can't take your eyes off them. We worked and re-worked the design until she was happy with it but it wasn't quite long enough.

I decided to add wire wrapped pearls to each end of the strung portion of the necklace. It added the additional length she needed and gave her (or me :) the option to adjust the length as well. The clasp is a simple sterling silver lobster claw.

Chrissy is not a big fan of earrings but she wanted something simple she could wear either with or without the necklace. In the second photo you can see the earring design she chose using Pearls and Crystal Quartz stacked on pretty Bali headpins. They are very simple, summery, and elegant.

High heat and rainy days also keep me from riding Boo, my favorite therapy horse...this is not a good thing. I haven't been able to ride for nearly two months now and I can feel my pain level increasing daily. However, a little "jewelry therapy", working with my daughter on a project, and having the luxury of doing all of this in a cool air-conditioned house has been a welcome distraction.

Just when I think life's not so great I find another reason to believe It IS!! God is good :) He keeps reminding me to get my mind off ME and to be thankful for the good things in life.

I promise to post again soon. I've got so many GOOD things to share with you!

A Quiet Mind...

Meet two of my Heroes. The big guy with four legs is "Boo", a Missouri Fox Trotter and Equine Assisted Therapy horse.  The guy leading him is Pat, my Instructor. This duo has turned my life upside down over the last couple of weeks.
I had planned to post here every day while this experiment was in process but I never seem to have the time! Although it is not a long drive to the barn, the traffic has been horrific because the highway on my route is under construction. Damn those orange cones! It's a double edged sword, the highway definitely needed work but the idiot drivers out there sharing the road with the rest of us make it a truly unpleasant experience. I get really tense in heavy traffic especially when so many people ignore the "left lane ends ahead" sign and then cause a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere because they are trying to squeeze in at the last minute. I mean, really, if I can read the sign and follow the directions I would assume a "normal" person could do it better :)

The point is this: I have trouble figuring out how to schedule my time. I'm always running late. It takes a while for Chrissy and I to get ready to leave what with changing into blue jeans and boots, remembering to take ice water along, and covering all the miscellaneous details. I just can't seem to gauge how long it's going to take even though I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now.  My inability to figure out what time we have to leave almost always gets us tied up in traffic. My anxiety level starts to rise, I get terribly impatient, and the STRESS sets in.

I would drive through flood waters to get to that barn and the white horse waiting for me there. He has become my friend and a source of relief from the physical pain and mental frustration I live with almost constantly. He is trustworthy and comforting and I am finally experiencing what I can only assume to be the equal of a "runner's high". Riding Boo provides me with a time and space of my own to leave my worries behind and turn down the volume in my head. Pat or Chrissy lead him so I don't really have to worry about where we're going. I've learned to relax enough that most of the time I do not have a tight grip on the saddle but allow my hands to rest on each side of the horn. "Relaxed but Ready!" is the mantra I hear from Pat's soft and soothing directions.  I just sit and enjoy the gentle rocking of Boo's steady gait. I concentrate on breathing with his hoof steps and becoming tuned in to his natural rhythms.

When I first started riding it was hard to keep from conversing with Pat about all of the day to day "stuff". I'm a talker and always have been. It's the way I work things out in my head.  Now... conversation is almost an intrusion in that "quiet place". I'm developing a quiet mind. Before this program began I can honestly say I had no idea what it felt like. My mind has always been this way. I have A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder) and now with the brain injury it's like having "A.D.D. on Steroids"! My brain runs at high speed constantly, flitting from one subject to the next, seldom resting. My thoughts must look like a hummingbird in flight, zipping from one blossom to the next while batting it's wings like crazy just to stay aloft.

Riding has allowed me to experience for the first time in my life a kind of self-induced peacefulness. Can you say "Ohm"? Yes, I'm aware of the obvious facts...I'm sitting on top of a 1200 pound animal that could startle or stumble at any moment. Boo is after all, a prey animal. He is calm and easy going for the most part but he is always aware of his surroundings. He is not fond of the beeping car horns of friendly neighbors as they drive by. He is always on the look out for the "lion in the tall grass"...even if it's just one of the family dogs chasing a rabbit. He seems to know just when and where to adjust his step to avoid the slick spot that might cause him to lose his footing. I can feel him tense during those times just as he can feel the slightest stiffening of my muscles. Most of the time I get the feeling Boo is just as concerned for my safety as his own.

I am not afraid on the back of this horse.  In fact, I am sometimes so relaxed that I "startle" just a little when he takes the occasional misstep, or responds to an unexpected noise or movement in the grass. Even so, I have learned to relax and trust his instincts and I am amazed at how easy this part of the journey has been. I am amazed at my own reactions!  I have never felt a moment of panic when Boo spooks or is startled. Even my daughter (who has taken to "mothering" me") is impressed.

Yes, I do need the constant coaching of my daughter and my Instructor to gently guide me and remind me check my "center" and to watch for the first signs of pain, spasm, or aching. They have to remind me to get off this gentle ride before I get too tired. Do you have any idea how amazing it is that I am so unaware of my own pain that I must be reminded to check for it? I feel truly blessed to be involved in this experience, to have the loving guidance of people who are quietly cheering me on, and to have met this horse who never fails to show patience and compassion both during and after I ride. His soft nuzzles on my neck are better than any massage.

The extra bonus....my drive home, no matter how heavy the traffic, doesn't stress me out! I am sleeping deeply and for longer periods of time after I ride. I'm taking less medication and having less pain. My brain remains calmer and more centered for hours afterward. I am definitely feeling the benefits of Equine Assisted Therapy for Adults! The only drawback? I'm just too relaxed and calm to post to my blog every day. I don't want to think too hard...it might take away my "Zen" mood :)

Riding my hiney off and my stress away....

The second day I rode Boo was much better than the first. This time I was able to relax a little more. I still struggled a bit with the mount and dismount, those will be some the more difficult things to master at this point. What I did notice was a little more acceptance from my ride. The first day I rode Boo he pretty much just snorted and walked away from me. Today he seemed to recognize me and accept my presence in the barn.

Once again Pat and Chrissy took turns leading while the other stayed close to my side...just in case :) I worked on deep breathing, keeping my head up and learning to relax to the sounds around me. There are a lot of songbirds, trees, a couple of ponds, and beautiful flowers all around me. I began to realize I can still see them with my head up looking at the horizon. I can still listen to them with my helmet on if I allow my mind to be clear and calm. I can "breathe" in time with the hoof beats of my horse....breathe in (one, two, three, four) breathe out (one, two, three, four), and relax. I'm learning to focus my thoughts on "the ride" and getting used to feeling "centered". I've a ways to go...I find myself thinking about jewelry designs, things I'd like to write about, and everyday "stuff". I need to learn to clear my brain and just focus on Boo and Me. That's a tough one but I'll get there!

By the end of the second lesson I was feeling comfortable and relaxed emotionally but the pain in my lower back and the muscle spasms were a reminder to get off the horse.

I dismounted and that was still very difficult for me, both physically and emotionally. I was very aware of how awkward I was. Graceful is not a word I would use to describe my dismount at this point. I know I will get better but for now it's just flat embarrassing!

The muscles in my lower back just aren't loose enough or strong enough to pull my leg over the saddle alone. Not only that, to dismount you have to move the upper body in the opposite direction. For instance, to dismount on the left I have to lean my upper body forward and to the right of the horses head while trying to tell my lower body to move the opposite direction. My brain just won't let me go there. I get "stuck" when I think about it, therefore I need help. I hate that part! I want to be independent of help when mounting and dismounting! Well, maybe a little help would be okay but just to hold the horse and saddle when I need to get on and off. I do appreciate the mounting block! My short legs would have a hard time getting up and over such a tall horse. I don't know how many "hands" high Boo is, but he's a big guy!

Today, after riding, I tried to give Boo a gentle stroke and thank him for allowing me to ride. He actually turned his head toward me! I leaned forward to give him a hug and BAM! smacked him right in the head with my riding helmet. He was fine, I was mortified! Thank goodness he decided to be gracious and ignore the head bump :) He did accept the carrot I offered afterwards with vigor!

I'm so looking forward to my next ride. You know....I don't think my back hurts nearly as bad after I ride...time will tell. I know I feel calmer and walking around afterwards helps stretch any tight muscles in my legs, back, and thighs. It feels GOOD!

I may just sleep tonight!

A Life without Jewelry...is it even possible for me?

I've been wondering for a while if I should take a little time off from jewelry design. So I made a list of "pros" and "cons"...

Pros: Time to get my house in order, organize my files, spend more time with my family, write about non-jewelry subjects. Spend much needed time taking care of ME (Doctor's orders), My dear husband, and my Dear Daughter. Try NEW things! Spend more time playing with my dogs.(I have one, a rescue, who doesn't know how to play. We need to teach her!) De clutter my life....the list goes on and on.

Cons: Lost sales, loss of "my place" in the jewelry community, loss of my Identity as a creative jewelry designer, less stress, less paperwork, less pressure to keep up with my creative friends.

The Con list is short but that doesn't mean it's less important. I've worked hard to create a small following of loyal clients both online and locally. I'm afraid to walk away, even for a little while from this passion and my "jewelry identity". It is still fairly new to me and very precious. I spent 45 years as a "left brainer" with a Type A personality. This new version of me - the one since my brain injury - is the "right brainer" and I'm still getting used to the "new Adrienne". How do I find the courage to just walk away?

The real question here is "How long can I continue to run this business without sacrificing my health and home?" The second, a nagging presence in the back of my mind.... "Is this what I'm supposed to be doing right now?" What is God's plan for my life in this moment in time? I need to find out.

Something has to give. I'm afraid my Muse is getting rather bored and even a little rusty! It seems I spend more time working on the "business stuff"...you know, taxes, paperwork, photographing my work, writing up descriptions, and filing, filing, filing! The creative, fun, therapeutic side of my art has been lost in the business. My Muse is feeling neglected and ignored. I used to spend so much time playing with my designs, enjoying the creative process, learning new techniques. I literally dreamed up jewelry designs in my sleep! Making jewelry was and is a healing process for me. It's the "selling jewelry" portion of this business I dread and deplore.

Having looked carefully at my lists I have been thinking a sabbatical from the rat race of photographing, listing, selling, mailing, figuring out fees would be good for me. I had planned to start the new year way back in January with a fresh new logo, and lots of brand new listings, networking and advertising galore. Then...

Life got really big in my house. In the fall just before the holidays my body just hit "the wall", a term my husband uses quite often. The side effects of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Fibromyalgia, a severe Vitamin D Deficiency and Chronic infections caught up and dragged me down. Just surviving the holidays was a great accomplishment! Sales were pathetic because advertising, listing, and networking was under par. My bad.

In March, just as I was beginning to regain a little energy, my daughter was badly burned in a cooking accident at home. I launched myself into cleaning wounds and changing bandages. Although she recovered much faster than anyone predicted and I am so very grateful for that gift, physically I was back in the same worn down condition.

April came and I thought Spring would provide lift and inspiration! It did provide inspiration. Unfortunately I developed terrible pain in my legs, back and pelvic regions. I couldn't walk! Finally I gave in and went to the Emergency Room only to be admitted for a battery of tests that resulted in few answers. Bone loss, bulging disks in my spine, and arthritis have taken hold. I spent a couple of weeks on ice packs and pain pills then decided I was too darned young to be benched on the sidelines of my own life.

Then it was discovered my husband is also a Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor! The cause of his injury occurred before we met and the symptoms had always been there, we just were not able to recognize them for what they were. I was so efficient in handling the details, organizing, and running the family we didn't realize he had lost the ability to do those things until I no longer could. Our lives began to fall apart and I couldn't understand why. Now I "get it"! He is just like me :) Although I'm glad we finally know and understand the "why" we now have to figure out the "how" of managing a home with three brain injured adults living under the same roof. Can you say S-T-R-E-S-S!? LOL!

A serendipitous opportunity came my way! My daughter, a former disabled rider in a local Equine Assisted Therapy Program was asked to assist our friend Pat with an experimental program. They needed her assistance with the horses. While speaking with Pat, a NAHRA certified instructor and horse owner, I found that he was offering this therapy program at no expense to three riders he would choose to participate. He would use his own well trained horses, on his property, and he would be the only instructor. The riders would spend as much time riding during the month of May as possible. The reason for this experiment was to find the answer to one question...Would riding a therapy horse more often and for longer periods of time be more beneficial to the handicapped or disabled riders? Most programs offer clients/riders one therapy session per week lasting approximately twenty to thirty minutes. We've all heard "less is more" but it is true in this situation? Maybe "more is better" in the world of Equine Therapy.
Pat's theory had even captured the attention of local hospitals and therapists. He and I were working out the details of Chrissy's volunteer time..what days he would need her help, how many hours per day, etc. when I asked him how many riders he had lined up. He told me he had two riders lined up but was looking for another. The two were both children with different forms of Autism. The mothers of the children would be required to keep a daily journal of the progress or problems they would observe during this experiment.

I really don't know what made me do it but I suddenly asked if he would consider taking on an adult rider with multiple issues....me. After a moment of surprised consideration he agreed. It would be interesting to see the benefits or problems I would experience with my own physical and mental challenges and it would be interesting to get the responses directly from the "rider" rather than from the mother's point of view. As an adult I could voice my own feelings, fears, opinions and progress - something that had yet to be considered.

After committing to the month long program I realized I was TERRIFIED! I wasn't comfortable around horses, hadn't ridden since I was just a small child, and started to question whether I could even handle the riding exercises in my physical condition. I almost chickened out but Pat wouldn't let me and neither would my daughter!

So, in the end, I guess the decision was made for me. I would take a short break from my business for the month of May 2010 to experience something new. We'll see how I feel at the end of this experience. It's possible I will be ready to jump back into my business...or not. I may discover freedom in stepping forward to try something new and relief in taking a step back from the "normal",

I'll keep you posted. In the meantime I won't be listing new products, or taking new orders. I'll be listening to my inner spirit and hopefully discovering new inspiration. See you soon!

Meeting Boo...the first day of riding.

On May 2, 2010 I arrived at the barn to begin my month long commitment to the experimental Equine Assisted Therapy program. I went pre-medicated knowing I would have a "melt down" without the drugs to keep my anxiety and muscle spasms under control. Despite the medication I was nervous. I went into the barn to meet Boo, the white Missouri Fox Trotter I would be riding. He really wanted nothing to do with me, a stranger in his barn. His aloof attitude stung me just a little. I'd been reading a bit about the connection between a rider and his horse and decided to try an approach I'd read about. Feeling a little silly I carefully approached the horse and whispered in his ear, "Hi Boo. I'm here to ride you today. I'm scared and a little nervous. Please be patient with me while I learn." He snuffled a little but I wasn't sure he understood my request.

After a few verbal instructions and setting up two mounting blocks to allow me to mount the horse without stressing any of my muscles I was ready to begin. (Big deep breath!) I struggled to mount Boo. I was high enough to simply step forward into the stirrup but finding the muscle strength, courage, and coordination to climb on was a challenge.

I was on his back a total of six minutes, so tense I could hardly breathe, and on the verge of a full blown panic attack. But in that six minutes, with the slow, gentle gait of the horse, the soothing voice of my instructor, the beautiful surroundings, and the encouraging smiles of my daughter I experienced hope. It felt good and yet it was a poignant experience. I had always wanted to ride horses but it wasn't something my parents were willing to provide on our cattle farm. Cattle = $$ but Horses = Expense. I had dreamed of riding free but here I was, at 51 years old, riding a therapy horse because of a multitude of medical issues. Not exactly the circumstances I'd imagined.

We walked SLOWLY around the paddock. My daughter leading the horse and Pat, my instructor walking by my side constantly coaxing and encouraging me to breathe and relax as much as I possibly could. (Breathe IN, Breathe OUT), and then it was over. I spent a few minutes learning to just sit and relax my muscles, not an easy assignment for me. The first ride was short but I'd done it and without falling off or injuring myself, the horse, or my instructors

My first dismount was embarrassingly painful and difficult. I couldn't get my brain to let my body do what it was supposed to do. The instructions were "backwards" and I really had to struggle to dismount. I kept thinking, "This isn't how I remember doing it" but my instructor was patient and I finally managed to drag my right leg over the back of my horse and still needed Pat to assist by pulling on my leg just to get it over. Poor Boo, I was bumping him with the toe of my boot the entire time. He must have thought me a terribly awkward ride. Pat watched me carefully for balance issues, helped me walk around the paddock to loosen up and get my bearing and questioned me about any vision problems or other possible side effects. I thought I was just fine!

The one thing I wasn't prepared for were the overwhelming emotions. I felt the tears begin to roll down my face and was surprised to realize I was crying. My instructor told me to "let it go..the release would be good for me." He comforted me as if I were one of the child riders, let me regain my composure and then instructed me to take a slow, steady walk back to my car. He had me stroll around the flower gardens, visit with his wife - Boo's owner, and when he was sure I was able; allowed me to drive home.

That night I slept for the first time in months. Even with heavy medication I have a terrible time closing my eyes and shutting down enough to rest. Many nights I don't sleep at all. That night I was able to fall asleep within four hours of taking my medication and experienced a deep restorative sleep. Amazing.

Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes:

Dear Grand-daughter,

The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.

Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed.
I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed.

I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!'
'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!' What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

Everyone started honking! I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love!

There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a "sunny beach"..

I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back.

My grandson burst out laughing. Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!!

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!!

St. Patrick's Day fun!

Let me just start off by saying I am not Irish...or at least I don't think there is an Irishman in my past :) I'm adopted and just recently found French Canadian blood in my veins. This fact allows me to cheer almost as hard for the Canadian Olympians as I do for our beloved Americans...as in U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Oh wait....let me get back on track here :) I was talking about the Irish! Here in Kansas City the Irish are a hearty group of souls and I'm here to tell you...they know how to celebrate! We have one of the largest parades in the nation on THE day...March 17th...Saint Patrick's Day! In fact, we have more than one parade as I discovered last year when I volunteered to participate in the parade handing out flyers and keeping little Leprechan's out of harms way. Wow! I was amazed at the crowd and then I discovered the parade I was in...well, it was just the "baby" parade. The BIG parade had yet to come....the costumes and floats were amazing! I don't know how many pair of green socks or how many glittering green hats were sold but someone made a bundle of money.

However, not everyone wants to go off to work dressed as a Leprechan. So how does one, who is NOT so inclined show proper Irish loyalty without wearing green tights and hats? Simple....you wear ANYTHING with a touch of "the Green".

Of course loyalty is only one of the reasons we Americans take this so seriously. The other reason is FEAR! I'm not sure what traditions are held in other countries but here in the USA if you're NOT wearing green you are in danger of being "Leprechan Pinched" by anyone wearing green, Irish American or not! And it hurts! OUCH!

A few years ago I found a great tutorial by Alice Korach for a beaded wire "Sparkling Shamrock Pin". It was so well written I just had to make one. I loved it and planned to wear it on St. Paddy's Day! Then my husband pointed out the obvious...it was NOT a Shamrock. To be truly lucky and Irish it had to be a Shamrock. So....using my new found skills and the great tips I'd learned I designed a new brooch in the shape of a proper Shamrock. The first one seemed a little large for my taste but I wore it anyway. Suddenly I had people asking where I'd found this brooch. Some liked the large size, others asked if it could be a bit more petite. I of course, assured everyone I could make more and in TWO sizes! (Sometimes I wish I could keep my big mouth shut.)

So, here it is...the Lucky Shamrock Brooch in both large AND small sizes. I have just one of each available and listed them in my ArtFire Studio earlier today. If you would like to have one....I wish you the Luck O' the Irish in getting there first!

The BIG Reveal......

It's here! The day for the big reveal. The chance to show off the results of a "Virtual Muse Gathering". What's a "muse gathering"...well, it's 80+ bead artists attending a virtual Bead Soup Party then divided into pairs - a feat our hostess Lori Anderson managed to pull off with epic success. The "partners" exchanged packages of beading supplies to use in creating a design just for this event. The only absolute rule in the design: We had to use the clasp and focal bead provided by our partner. I was quite fortunate to have received a lovely package from my partner Debbie Goering of Prairie Emporium Handcrafted Jewelry.

I received two focal beads, both handmade by bead artist Barbara Lewis, and a lovely assortment of stones, seed beads, and a lovely handmade sterling silver clasp Debbie made for the collection.

Now, before I show reveal the finished piece I want to share a little something about my partner Debbie Goering. She did not share this information with me...but there was something about her address nudging my memory. Greensburg, Kansas? Hmmm...Where had I heard that name before? I started my Internet search and it didn't take long to find the information I was looking for.

On May 4, 2007 Greensburg, KS was hit by an F5 tornado with 200 mph winds. The town destroyed, people died, and lives were devastated. The photos and stories are horrific. NOW I remember! I remember crying and praying as I watched the news footage on television. Oh, but there is more....

Greensburg, KS is now one of the most well known small towns in the world! Why? Because her residents decided to take the absolute worst that Mother Nature had to dish out and not only survive and rebuild but to make a statement in the process. Today Greensburg is the "Greenest" little city in all of Kansas and probably the United States. Now I remember the little Kansas town featured in all of the news reports about living, building, and growing "Green".

Aha! It is amazing what a little research and information can do to spark the imagination and inspire the creative Muse in each of us. I returned to my worktable and took another look at the ingredients Debbie provided and what I saw was GREEN! The reaction was immediate...I knew I had to design a piece honoring this creative woman and the people of Greensburg. In it, you will find "elements" of nature...some raw and some refined. The angry sky before the storm and the seeds of change that followed. Look closely for the details and let your imagination do the rest.

"Elements from Oz"

I used as many natural beads as I could find from my private stash...wood, bone, clay, stone, Buri seeds, copper, silver, and many beads depicting nature such as the large lampwork bead (left) reflecting an angry sky. The focal bead is of course, the “eye” of the storm. I chose to attach it with an unusual Bali Silver bead that, quite frankly, reminded me of a "handle"...something to "Hang ON!" to. The leaves are glass of course but I loved the different shapes and colors. Leaves fly and swirl during a storm but they are also the first hint of new life here in the Midwest.

I hope this necklace, as small and unimpressive as it may be, will convey just a little of the respect I have for Debbie, her talent, and the town of Greensburg. They have taken us over the rainbow" to a real and beautiful new "Oz"! Thanks Debbie for the inspiration!

Bead Soup Ingredients

Yay! It came in the mail the other day...my Bead Soup Party package from my partner in design Debbie Goering of Prairie Emporium Handcrafted Jewelry. This is a photo of the ingredients she sent to get my "Muse" stirred up. Now, if can just figure out the recipe!

The ingredients included beads...handcrafted clay beads, beautiful dark Green Quartz faceted rondelles, pretty little tan beads...not sure if these are Riverstone or Indian Opal?..and a beautifully handcrafted Sterling Silver clasp! Debbie tossed in a package of pretty seed beads as well for a little extra spice :)

Words from James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" popped in my head as soon as I opened the package..."Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose..." Alas, one of my favorite songs and definitely a truism when it comes to my personal color choices!

I must admit I'm a bit overwhelmed with ideas at the moment but "it" will come....my Muse will climb out of her dizzy spin and a piece of jewelry will emerge. We can be surprised together when I post the final results here on February 10th! I'm not allowed to post the photo until then so be sure to come back and take a look.

Bead Soup Party Exchange

I'm so excited about this party! I got an email from my exchange partner Debbie Goering and we worked out the logistics...snail mail addresses, etc. We didn't discuss our design styles or what kind of materials we normally work with. I visited her blog to check out her work so I'd have some idea of what she normally works with....all with the intent of sending her something completely out of her element. I thought it might make for more fun and tease her creative muse.

However, as I got in the mode of collecting components and a clasp for her package, I found myself gathering items I would use. We have very similar design styles. I didn't send a huge package. I was rather in a dither about it too! Send more? Send less? Did I send enough?

I finally decided "less is more". My intent was to share a "spark" ... the kindling so to speak...without actually gathering all of the wood and lighting the fire! I can tell you, Debbie has enough creative energy to set her own fire :) Just look at these earrings from her Etsy shop! Aren't they gorgeous!

My Favorite Piece of Jewelry

Recently I was asked by a fellow jewelry designer, “What is your favorite piece of jewelry and why?” This is my response….

A few years ago a dear friend asked me to design a piece of jewelry for her husband (who is also very good friend) using an heirloom piece of jewelry he had received from the estate of his late Aunt. The piece I was given to work with was made of small brass plated spikes (concrete nails) soldered together to form a Cross. His Aunt had been a woman of great faith and she wore this simple piece of jewelry often. The brass plating had worn away where her hands had caressed the cross while wearing it as a pendant. "Her cross" held very fond and distinct memories for my friend.

A bit about my friend....

The son of Christian Missionaries, Jay spent his childhood in Israel - spoke fluent Hebrew, and has the voice of an angel. He is an inspiration in my life. He exudes "peace" with his music and in his every expression. I know he would be embarrassed to know I think so highly of him but sometimes we need to let others know what a positive influence they have in our daily lives. He now serves as the Worship Pastor for our tiny little church in Kansas City, MO while holding down a full time job and raising a beautiful family with his wife Susan.

The Process...

I was almost afraid to begin the project. I wanted it to be as close to perfect as I could make it but I did not want to do anything to desecrate the original piece. I mean, really...for a Christian, the "Empty Cross" is one of the greatest symbols of our faith. How do you improve on a perfect symbol?

For me "the Cross" is a symbol of God's most important gift to us. However, is it also a reminder of the gifts He gives us to use in our daily lives. Music, song, a voice... these are all words I think of when I see or hear Jay. These are the gifts he was given.

I decided to integrate what I knew of his life into this piece. Jay’s faith, family, talent, his childhood memories...these are the things most precious to him. These are the events responsible for his very identity.

I located a woman who's talent lies in making custom rubber stamps. I asked her if she could make a stamp, a tiny stamp, with only one word - "Sing"...but...I wanted it in Hebrew! How could I possibly know she had studied Hebrew and her response would be "of course I can do that!”?

I asked another friend who specializes in working with precious metal clay to help me make a miniature plaque for the cross. It would need to be “stamped” with one word. This friend is a pro at PMC art and I was not at all surprised that she could accomplish this...the trick was in teaching ME to make the tiny plaque. She graciously offered up her time, supplies, kiln, and her home to give me a crash course in PMC. I know she would have made a perfect piece but I wanted to make it myself. As it turned out, the one I made revealed a surprise for both of us! But....I'll get to that later....

Using the original cross, and wanting to keep that rough-hewn feel, I decided to use mixed metals. I wire wrapped the little plaque to the cross...99% pure silver wrapped in simple copper wire. I hung it from a beautiful but masculine black braided cord and attached a simple handmade sterling silver clasp. The piece was nearly finished and I hoped Jay would be not only happy with the finished product but also engulfed in memories as he took in the detail. Its design was after all, a product of his life.

It wasn't until the final step I discovered one detail I had not noticed before...The surprise I spoke of earlier. I have never been one to "sign" my pieces. It is always a difficult process for me. My hands may construct the jewelry but the ideas, the designs and talent I possess is a gift I have received. In essence, it is my gift from “the Cross”.

I was applying the final polish to the piece as I considered how to leave my signature in the most discreet way possible. It was only then I noticed a series of fine lines in the plaque. They looked almost like wood and I wondered what could possibly have caused the imprint. It was then I realized I had inadvertently "signed" this piece of jewelry with my own fingerprints. My own very personal “brand” was already there!

This "Gift of the Cross" is my favorite piece of jewelry. "God works in mysterious ways." We have all heard it but this time it was very real for me. Every person I met in the design process, every person I asked for help, every step no matter how tedious became an integral part of the design.

I hope every jewelry creator, every artist; every person with a special gift has the opportunity to experience this kind of "revelation" in at least one creative endeavor.

Celebrating my Dad's big day!

Today my Dad is celebrating his 86th birthday...wow!

We never know how long we'll have our loved ones with us. I've been especially blessed-I still have both of my parents here on earth with me. I don't take that for granted...ever.

You see, my parents adopted me when I was six years old. Rescued would be a more descriptive word. It hasn't always been easy or perfect but we survived...each other, life's unexpected surprises, and the roller coaster ride that all families experience. We're just like any other family...a little dysFunctional but the love and support is something I can always count on.

I've "become" many things over the years just because I was blessed and allowed to become a part of this family... Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Wife, Mother, Grandmother. Each step has made me the person I am today. Each experience has given my heart a chance to grow and expand. Each family member has enriched my life.

Through it all, the good and the bad, the most beautiful moments and the ugliest, the most glorious and the most tragic...my Dad has been there. He isn't perfect but then again he IS human. He survived ME and because of that I strongly suspect he has super powers he has yet to reveal :)

He has served God, Country, and Family. He has survived "The Great Depression", World War II, a heart attack, the loss of his hearing, and many heartbreaks along the way. He has been blessed with a sharp mind, a faith in God that never wavers, a marriage that has endured for 65 years, the parenting of a son and daughter, the birth four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Most importantly, for me at least, he has been my Dad. He has loved me as his own. It is admittedly selfish of me to make this claim. While it may not have been HIS greatest achievement in life it has been one of the greatest acts of love and kindness in MY life.

Thanks Dad for indulging me with love, patience, funding :), and understanding when I least deserved them. I thank God every single day for the gift of YOU!

"New Moon" Movie Review and Jewelry

I confess, I'm an "edge of the crowd" fan of the the "Twilight" series of books. I'm not a bleeding heart, drooling, full out addicted follower but I enjoyed the series.

Last night I took my daughter to see "New Moon" the second movie, based on the book. It wasn't my favorite movie in the world but it certainly wasn't the worst. Comparing it to "Twilight", the acting was better and the screenplay was much better, but the sprinkling of comical moments throughout was, in my opinion, the best and most important improvement. I like to laugh and let's face it, life is funny sometimes. It's nice to see a sweet, exciting, teenage love triangle (bizarre as it may be) that isn't full of sex, foul language, and gore. This movie has it's fair share of tragedy, teenage angst, and beautiful actors (Helloooo Taylor Lautner!) but this time the writers managed to blend in a bit of much needed humor and fun.

I must admit I probably wouldn't have gone to a midnight movie release with anyone but my daughter. Truthfully, I'm not a fan of movie theaters in general. I'd rather wait for the DVD and watch the movie at home where I can be completely comfortable, but this "one time only" event was fun. It's a memory she and I will share forever and those are hard to come by.

I did a search this morning for "New Moon" jewelry and found pretty much what I expected..several simple but sweet and inexpensive "movie photo" pieces, a large amount of cheap, tacky looking jewelry tagged as handmade that really isn't (adding a store bought chain to a mass produced pendant is not what I'd call handmade or handcrafted), and several nice handmade pieces that are pretty but didn't really catch my eye. However, I did find a couple of really pretty pieces worth sharing here. I found both of them on ArtFire.com

Vitamin D Deficient?

I try to eat healthy, spend as much time outdoors as I possibly can, and stay up to date on the latest "stay healthy" information. When my mother suggested I have my Vitamin D level checked I didn't think much about it. I had my Vitamin D level checked a few years ago and it was "fine" according to my primary care doctor.

As many of you know I have a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and it's easy to attribute many of my physical and mental symptoms to that condition. Recently I had a little health scare which required an MRI of the brain and a boat load of lab work. All of the results available to my doctor earlier this week was A-OK! Great news right? YeeHaw!

Today I got a call from my Neurologist office with the results from my Vitamin D test. According to her office they like to see at least a level of 50 or more with optimal levels being around 80. Now I'm not a doc so these numbers don't mean much to me. I'm thinking "50 what"? But I don't need to know the scientific breakdown to know that being within the "normal range" is a good thing. As it turned out my lab results showed my Vitamin D level at 8. Dangerously low. Prescription required and retesting again in four months to make sure I'm at least back in the "normal range.

"What happens if I'm not back within normal ranges?" I ask.
The nurse says, "We take a more agressive approach."
Hmmm. What does that mean? I don't know and right now it's not important to me. One day at a time I'll deal with this but in the meantime I did a little research on my own. Holy cow! I had no idea how much trouble a body can experience when it is deficient in Vitamin D or how prevalent this condition is becoming in the general public!

I've attached a web link to the title of this post. Please take the time to read the article! If you have any of these symptoms then I would strongly encourage you to talk to your doctor about having a simple blood test.

This is not something you can "self-diagnose" but you must be self aware. No one knows your body as well as you do but it's easy to assume that you're tired because of overwork, lack of sleep, or stress. We like to think there is nothing seriously wrong. But why take a chance when it's something that could be easily addressed?

I'm climbing down off of my soapbox now :) I know this is not what you might expect to read on this blog but sometimes I have to share information for the greater good. If just one reader of this blog is helped because of this post then I've done something to help. It will not sell my jewelry and it will not further the popularity of my designs, and it might be considered right down boring. So be it.

A shout out is required here to my mom....Thank you! You are hearby granted a pass to "gloat" (a little) and you have every right to say "I told you so!" Enjoy this moment Mom :) You've earned it!

I just returned from a visit with my Neurologist. She had GOOD news! After a bit of a scare last week I had an emergency MRI of the ole brain and a bunch of lab work. The results are in and all is well :) Not normal but then again, I wasn't expecting "normal" :D Afterall, who's to say what's normal and what's not? I've never quite understood the word. What's normal for me is never considered the same for anyone else...you can ask my mother! She'll tell you I've never done anything the old fashioned way, whether it's my work, my life style, or my health. It's good to be different! My life is definitely interesting :) Thank God!...and I mean that literally. He knows I bore easily!

October Rain

I was watching it rain on this dreary, cold October morning. Still warm and cozy in my PJ’s with a mug of hot coffee in my hand, I was not looking forward to getting out or worse yet, getting wet.

Of course staying inside where it's warm and dry is not an option when you're daughter works in a horse stable and you are the designated driver for the day. Horses and livestock have to be fed. Period. She made a commitment. Period. I was feeling a little grumpy about it. They aren’t even my horses! Harrumph!

Being the Mom I am and determined to teach my girl “by example”, we got dressed and off we went in the pouring rain. Poor kid, I drove her crazy all the way to the barn, "Have you got a rain coat?" "What did you pack in your lunch?" "Will you be warm enough?" “Are those boots going to keep your feet dry?" (Oh noooo! She forgot her muck boots! Bad mommy! Bad mommy!) She endured my questions with her usual ruffle proof attitude. Finally, I released my prisoner and started the drive back home in hard rain, heavy traffic, and sporting a bad attitude. Harrumph!!

Then I noticed the trees, the fields, and all the COLOR! In spite of the rain, it was pretty. Ok, more than pretty, it was gorgeous! I started thinking about the trees and bushes around me, making a mental note of which ones I wanted to be sure and photograph later today. My mood started to improve. Begrudgingly, I decided life was not a complete "pit".

Now that I'm back home, wide awake, and inside my warm house, a second cup of java close at hand, I've been looking at my yard. It is looking decidedly flamboyant!

Ahhh! Fall! It is time to enjoy the smell of wood smoke from a nearby fireplace, hot cider, and crisp, juicy apples. It is time to enjoy the nip in the air, whirling leaves, raking the lawn, and preparing the house for winter.

It is that time of year in Missouri when the dogs race around the yard with reckless and joyful abandon just because it feels good to be cool and not drowning in the humidity of summer. Suddenly I realized I am looking forward to laughing as they attack the “monster leaf rakes” invading their territory and barking at “critters” in the nearby woods still unseen but noisily revealed by crunching leaves.

Hmmm. I had forgotten. I love this season with all of its brilliant color, cool days and cold nights, and yes, I even love October rain.

Oh! I remember now what it is I really do not enjoy. It’s MORNING! I am not a morning person and that is a non-seasonal malady. Harrumph!

I am a “Dory”

A woman said this to me the other day..."You remind me of that little fish in the movie "Finding Nemo"...You know the one that can't remember anything. She swims around in circles, lost but happy."

Wow, she's right! I am a "Dory". I watched a couple of YouTube clips and realized how much Dory and I have in common.

I like Dory. I liked her when the movie came out and I like her now that I can relate to her "condition" :) She is smart little fish but she has a little "short term memory" problem. Hmmm, I know all about that.

Dory is happy in spite of her memory problems. Me too.

I have always had A.D.D. (attention deficit disorder). Since the brain injury, it has become "A.D.D. on Steroids - but without the steroids", as my neurologist is fond of saying. Take a little Vyvanse and I'm good to go...now if I could just remember where I was going and what I was going to do when I got there!

They say I have lost my "execution skills". I didn't know I was ever capable of executing anyone! Ahhh, not "Execution" but execution, as in executing a task, getting things done, arriving on time, planning and actually doing what I planned. I get it now; I just can't DO anything about it. ARGH!

Just when I thought I had things figured out, a new wrench shows up. Now, I like tools. Tools are my friends, in fact, I'm kind of a tool junky... but I am not big on wrenches.

Another thing I have forgotten. Numbers. Math was never my favorite subject but I managed to use it well enough to work as an office manager, home manager, family manager, and in my jewelry business. We use numbers everyday for most everything we do. I had not really thought about this until I lost the ability to use or remember them. Try spending one day without using numbers. Here's the catch: you must continue to track your money, tell time, remember a phone number, pay a bill, drive, schedule an appointment, order a prescription, cook, or any of the gazillion other tasks you perform each day.

I can still DO math I just cannot remember the numbers needed to do the problem much less remember the answer long enough to use it. So much for calculating ANYTHING in my head or using a calculator, that doesn't have a "print" option. I have a calendar application and a good old-fashioned notepad and pen...now if I could just remember how to access them it would be great!

Visual Memory: able to be perceived as a picture in the mind rather than as an abstract idea. In other words, the ability to recognize everyday things. You see it, you recognize it, and you know how to use it or at the very least, you can remember what it is or how it's used. Examples: the coffee maker you use every day, your computer, cell phone or a traffic light.

I have a little problem with my visual memory. The examples above are the items that present the biggest challenges on a daily basis. I must admit to running out to buy a cup of coffee when I cannot remember how to use my coffee maker. My computer, thankfully, has a "mind" of its own and can pretty much run without my help unless it goes into sleep mode and I can't remember how to wake it up.

My cell phone is my lifeline. I use the calendar option, all the alarms, bells, whistles and ring tones it can offer just to keep me on track throughout the day. That is common in this age of technology. Using it to remind me to eat, take my medication, brush my teeth, leave the house for an appointment, make a phone call, wash a load of laundry, dry a load of laundry, etc., etc., etc.....My entire "life" is on that phone in the most literal sense of the word. When memory runs low in my cell phone, I know I'm in trouble.

You can only imagine how scary it is to drive with Visual Memory impairment! I have a navigator…my daughter. She is better than a GPS when it comes to giving me verbal cues. She understands the need to use few but very easily processed directions. Stop, go, right, left, yes, no…the only vocabulary required from a personal navigator. Yes, I do depend on my GPS, especially after finding myself completely lost in a few unsafe neighborhoods. My GPS doesn't see the yellow caution light up ahead or clear her throat to let me know the red light has changed to green. My GPS is great at "recalculating" directions after I've missed a turn but it doesn't say, "it's okay Mom, you can turn around and go back." My GPS requires a computerized update, my daughter does not. Besides, my daughter is always a better companion. When the GPS can't "see" the street I'm driving on I can always depend on my human navigator to assure me it's really there!

Technology is a wonderful thing. I cannot imagine my life without the help of the internet, cell phones, computers, and coffee makers! However, there are limits to what technology can do. Lending comfort or offering a friendly reminder is not within the realm of my universe. While I do not like the changes in my brain or the ways it processes information I am grateful everyday for my ever reliable human navigator and the way my challenges have enhanced our relationship.

Now if I could just remember my name…

Don't Worry!

It seems I always feel inspired to write on Sunday. I think it is because I get inspired on Sunday...by God, great friends, and family members. On Sunday, one of the few days I take a break from my life to focus on rest and praise these thoughts seem to flow....

Today we talked about worry...how we worry, why we worry, when we worry, and how ridiculous it is in the "big picture" to worry at all. I've thought for a long time that worry - the very act of worry - is an insult to God.

For me, a natural born worry-wart, it's an art. I was born to worry! However, I learned an important lesson several years ago when both of my children were out of town, in situations outide of my control, and in the hands of people I really didn't know but had decided to trust. I asked God to take care of them, trusted Him to protect them, and then continued to worry anyway. It didn't work out very well.

Both of my children fell into seriously difficult situations at almost exactly the same time. Both were well beyond my physical reach to help or comfort them. I felt completely helpless and frustrated beyond imagination!  I got angry....at God, the people I had trusted to care for them, and the people who were hurting my children. Two different cities, completely different circumstances, and all I could do was cry, worry, get angry, cry, worry some more, and get angrier. I even got angry with my husband because he could sleep and wasn't as frantic as I was. How could he possilby rest when our children were in trouble!

I reached a state of hysteria and finally had a little "come to Jesus" talk with God. I told him how disappointed I was in Him and how betrayed I felt because after all, I had entrusted my children to Him! I can only imagine how that must have been received and it grieves me to admit my lack of faith. I must have been out of my mind. In fact, I know I was. It was the first time I had ever felt truly abandoned by God...and the last.

The next day I started receiving phone calls from complete strangers offering help to my children. I was able to speak with each of my children and realized they felt a kind of buffer surrounding them. They felt God. He was with them and He was caring for them. Yes, they were still frightened and needed our help but truthfully, they were much more calm and in control than I. It was then I realized the fault was mine. I may have said I trusted God to care for my children and I may have asked Him to protect them but I didn't let go - really let go and let God do the job. I thought He needed my help.  I thought I could do a better job! What foolish arrogance!

God doesn't like it when we worry. In fact, I really believe he's insulted by it. When we worry we're telling Him, "I don't trust you to take care of me, my family, my friends, my job, my life!" and then we turn around and insult Him even more by declaring our supreme abiltity to do all of these things better than He. Of course, when going through big drama it's hard to shrug and turn the burden over to anyone we don't fully trust to be singly capable of handling the job. We are always better at fixing these problems. There is a real irony in this thinking. If we're so great at handling our problems, how did they get to be problems at all and why aren't they already "fixed". Because God fixes things. Saying we trust God is easy.  Actually giving it over to God, giving up all control, especially when it comes to our children, is the most difficult part of faith.

I asked God to forgive me for my arrogance and lack of faith, my harsh words, and my stupidity. I know He granted that request simply because I confessed and asked, but more importantly, because He loves me...even when I'm stupid and faithless and arrogant.

I've gotten better at letting go. I don't worry much anymore. I still have to fight the urge, the need to control, and the pride. I have to fight my natural instincts and that is what I believe faith is all about. It's believing you CAN let go even when your instincts and common sense tell you to hold on.

When my son was a little boy the movie "Cocktail" was in theatres. The music was all over local radio stations but I had never heard the songs...or maybe I was just too busy to listen. He came home from school one day and I heard him humming a tune I didn't recognize.  When I asked him about it he just started singing the words. He knew each word but the most important were "Don't Worry, Be Happy!" I thought it was cute, funny and incredibly sweet.

I still hear those words in my head today but now I know just how true they are. I don't have the power to live this life alone. Now. Today. Tomorrow. I choose to live them and believe it is truly possible.

and I hear Him whisper......"Don't worry. Be happy."

It's been an Amazing two weeks!

Wow! In two weeks time I have experienced such a myriad of events. I'm almost speechless...and that is very rare for me.

Let's see....

1. Evidently I've been in the "lost and found" box for about 40 years. I was adopted when I was a wee child and have recently been found by ten siblings I had no idea existed.

2. I am of French Canadian descent and I've been pronouncing my last name incorrectly for the last 50 years. For those of you who speak "Missouri French" the name "Thibeault" is NOT pronounced "thigh-bolt" but "T-bo" (right?)

3. I am surrounded by a group of women who are truly amazing and inspiring!

4. Sciatica is NOT fun and IS very painful.

5. I'm married to "Rip Van Winkle" at least until he get used to being back at work on a full time job...hard for us "old people".

6. I'm helping launch a new Equine Therapy group-another passion of mine...if you're interested in helping or donating to the cause contact me!

7. I've decided to return to my free-lance journalistic roots and write a book...actually one of several if all goes as planned. People have been urging me to do this for years. I think it's time.

8. I have an incredibly blessed life! (not news really but it's nice to be reminded..)

9. And last but not least, business is picking up...Yea!

I think that's everything. It sure seems like a lot in a short period of time! A friend told me the other day "They ride the roller coaster of my life with me". Yep! That's a pretty darned good description!

Cheyenne, Carved Poppy Jasper Pendant Necklace

I've just listed this wonderful Poppy Jasper Pendant Necklace in my Art Fire Store. It's absolutely gorgeous and perfect for the upcoming fall season.

The pendant is a large carved leaf and it's beautifully detailed. I added a pretty beaded stone necklace to enhance to leaf using Tiger Iron, Red Jasper, Bali Silver, and Hematite.

(Please note: Hematite is a man made stone. Natural Hematite is no longer readily available. It is seldom found in it's natural form so. This is not Magnetized Hematite. )

If you're wondering how I came to call this piece "Cheyenne" please check out the shop listing. This piece is dear to my heart because of the child it was made to honor. Most of you who know me also know that I have a very special place in my heart for adopted, abused, neglected and/or abandoned children. I have recently made a series of leaf necklaces, each named for a child I love. What better way to honor the challenges of a child who is in the process of building a new life!

It's bright and beautiful this morning! I hope you enjoy this gorgeous day and spend it reflecting on the BLESSINGS in your life. Whether it's praising God in a building filled with music and uplifting words or from your sunlit deck with a cup of coffee, remember to give thanks!

I would be in my tiny little church this morning except for a tiny little kidney stone that feels much bigger than it really is. "This too shall pass." Hopefully without help or a trip to the hospital. In the meantime, I am determined to be thankful it is not something much worse. I am determined to remember that Jesus suffered much more than I ever will and he would have done it just for me had I been the only one alive to receive the most precious of gifts.

I'm not here to preach. I'm here to praise an audience of one. He is the only one and I'm thankful for each day I am still here, alive and able to create, write, speak, breathe.......

Live joyfully! I try to live by that mantra. Some days are harder than others. Some days I let others influence my thoughts, my feelings, my attitude. Some days I let my health and physical pain guide my actions. That's when I hunker down and pray to be lifted up. He never fails me.

So today, while I wait for this stone to pass and the pain to ease I will remember that I am blessed to be here, at home, with my laptop, a cup of coffee, and the sun shining down from a beautiful sky.

I thank God.

I'm Teaching Again

I just confirmed the dates for my fall class schedule! I'll be teaching at the Genevieve Flynn Studio in the Art District of Kansas City, MO. Genevieve is a wonderful artist in her own right, creating the most beautiful jewelry and an assortment of other fine things to add to your home wish list.

I met Genevieve several years ago but finally took her Beginning Silversmith Class last year. What a great investment! She is a superb instructor, has a wonderful personality, and is incredibly willing to help her students. She also hosts "First Friday" events each month featuring local artists and their work.

Genevieve has graciously offered the use of her studio for my classes. Although I won't be teaching Silversmith classes (heaven forbid!), I will be teaching classes in Wire Wrapping from the very most basic techniques to more involved pieces and some that are just fun and fairly easy to learn.

Beginning Wire Work I

The most basic class. I was once told that you must be "brilliant at the basics" to become the best at what you try to achieve. That's what this class is all about. The tools, choosing the right wire for your project, safety, and basic wire sculpture. You'll make a bracelet similar to the one shown here. It's great worn just as you see it here or even better...add charms or bead drops to dress it up! Fun and informative. This is the first class in the series and required for those having no prior experience in wire wrapping.

Beginning Wire Work II

The next step in wire wrapping! You'll learn to make beautiful wire wrapped loops, add beads and other items to your work as well as make basic earrings, coils, simple handmade clasps to compliment your work and a whole new bag of tricks! This class will open up your world of wire wrapping to a new level of competency. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, all are suddenly available limited only by your imagination.

Little Brown Nest Pendant or Ring

This little brown nest is one of my favorite projects to make. Complete with three sweet little eggs this piece can be worn as a pendant or with just a few changes be transformed into a ring. Hey! I'm alive and still kicking! Actually, I have been buried alive but I've decided to dig my way out and take back my life, my business, and my art! Yea for me! Here's the proof.....

Sometimes we kind of get sucked into a vortex that really has no place or positive value in our lives. That's not to say that we don't get positive experiences from our little detours but making sure we get back on track...that's the tricky part.

I've been distracted and detracted from my art, my therapy and my gift. My body and brain finally said "Enough!"

As of June 1, 2009 I will be back to my old creative ways. I'm getting ready to launch my new website! I still have a lot of work to do but I'm on my way!! I even have Google Checkout and a Paypal Shopping Cart! We're ready to rock-n-roll!

Just waiting to settle on a new logo for the business....can't seem to make a decision when I have so many good options to choose from! Thanks for that Devon!

Ever had on of "those days"?

ARGH! No, I'm not in a pirate kind of mood but it's been one heck of a day and I'm really cranky.

I was shopping at one of my favorite craft stores today and just happened to mosey on back to the "clearance wall"....one of my favorite places for serendipitous finds. I saw this little kit hanging on the wall. It had originally sold for $18.00 and there it was, on clearance for $6.49!
Eureka!!

Now, I've had this experience before. You think you've found a great buy only to get it home and find that someone has removed an essential item from the box and now you're stuck trying to find the correct replacement part. So, I happened to see a large box nearby (a shipping box that had yet to be opened) and decided to use it for a table. The kit had been opened already so I wanted to make sure everything was still there. I began taking the items out of the box and laying them out on the box.

It just so happened that I was standing right by the Manager's office. I saw him walk by, we exchanged quick hello's and I continued with my project. I heard the call go out for someone to come to the craft aisle. It didn't seem strike me as odd.

By this time I'd determined that all of the necessary items were still present and accounted for so I returned them to the kit box and put it in my basket. I turned around and there stood a Police Officer...slowly approaching me! Suddenly the Manager comes out of his office, looks in my basket, sees the kit is there, and casually greets the Officer and starts waving him back as if to say "never mind" or "go away NOW!". These two guys start talking like they just happened to run into each other on the very back aisle of the store.

Anyone will tell you I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but, hello! I realized there were no other customers standing around, just me, and then I realized the manager had called this guy back because he thought I was going to shop lift "the kit". ARGH!!! I just looked at him and said, "Is everything alright?" He acted very nonchalant and made some comment about a misunderstanding. So, not being the type of person to keep my mouth shut, I looked at both of them and said, "Oh PLEASE! You thought I was going to steal something from your store?" He looked a little sheepish. He should have!

If I were even considering stealing something which goes completely against my character, I certainly wouldn't do it right in front of a video camera and right next door to the Manager's office! DUH! I shop there A LOT and it really ticked me off. I know, he was just doing his job, but good grief!

Then, I was driving to work and came to a place on the highway that has a real bottleneck where traffic tends to backup. I noticed a tractor trailer rig trying to bulldoze his way onto the highway. It happens all the time. Then I realized he was trying to force his way into the center lane and there was already a car in that spot. The driver of the car was honking his horn and the truck just kept coming. Now, I don't usually get all wigged out about these things but that car was trying desperately to get over and out of the way of that truck. The problem was that I was in the same spot the car was trying to move into. I started honking my horn. I had a very narrow shoulder framed by a guard rail....not much room and no options.

Long story short, I was run off the road. I managed to get my car out of the way and stopped, the poor car trying to escape the truck wasn't so lucky...he lost the right side door handles, mirror, etc.... Needless to say, traffic came to a screeching halt, and I mean that literally!

The highway patrol was called ( I could swear he looked just like the guy in the craft store) and wouldn't let me leave until he'd taken every one's statement. No one was injured thank heaven but I was shaking like a leaf. When I get stressed this poor old brain of mine turns my mouth into mush. My words get lost and I can't speak normally. NOW the patrolman thinks maybe I've been drinking. ARGH!!!! "No sir, I've not been drinking. I've just had the wits scared right out of me and my brain has gone on strike." I had to explain that I'm just a little brain damaged and after observing me and "chatting" with me until I calmed down a bit he decided to believe me.

Did I mention that I was on my way to pick up the girls at school on the other side of town? ARGH again! I knew I'd never make it on time to pick them up so, with the officer's permission, I called a friend who lives near the school and asked her to rescue them for me.

Suffice it to say it's been a tedious day. Now I get to look forward to a snow storm this weekend while I'm "babysitting" a preteen girl and maybe her teenage sister, not to mention my boss's three dogs. One of which will probably look like a squeaky toy to my Wire Fox Terrier, Mae, who likes to kill furry things that run around in my yard.

I think I'm ready to retire. For life. Now if I could just hang the "CLOSED" sign on my brain and get some sleep I'll probably feel differently tomorrow...I mean today...later today.

Okay, the mush brain thing is starting to kick in again so I'm moving toward my bed......we'll talk soon.

In the meantime ... Live Life Joyfully! You never know what tomorrow may bring.

Oh I know....you just can't believe I blogged twice in one day huh? Well I just can't seem to keep my silly self inside on these nice days but night time does come around and I'm forced to come inside.

We've been doing the Spring Yard Cleaning this past week and cutting down trees was one of those projects. ARGH! Exhausting and sometimes painful it is still a huge improvement to our property. More to the point (finally), I just kind of felt sad to watch such majestic living things destroyed.

Yes, we'll use a great deal of those by products to mulch and conserve our land but as the limbs and branches began to pile up it started to look more and more like a mosaic of sorts. Yeah, I know. I see art everywhere, even in the rubbish of trees :)

It got me thinking and I remembered a pair of earrings I'd made a while ago that look like a mosaic but it's a natural gemstone. They are so earthy and elegant all at the same time. My kind of jewelry! Take a look at these and tell me what you think....

Hammering out my frustrations....

I've been frustrated lately. The dumb little ups and downs of my life have been getting a bit tedious and sometimes I just need to get physical without of course hurting anyone or anything.

I realized that this sometimes requires a bit of imagination and creativity on my part so I picked up a hammer and a couple of copper rings I had in my stash and bashed the heck out of them!

It felt really good and it looked really good :) This is the result of all that beating and banging...

Is there still romance after 25 years of marriage?

You bet there is :) It may not be the kind of romance we used to share and it may come in the oddest of moments but there is still a bit of romance to be found.

Today we shared a job we both really dislike doing....grooming the dogs. His gift to me was in clipping the nails, a job I abhor and he doesn't much like either but he did it for me.
He and Chrissy bathed both dogs for me...another job I don't mind but hate doing on the same day. Grooming is hard work and for me to do all steps alone and then clean up afterward is almost impossible. I clipped, and cut, and brushed, and combed, and sweet talked the dogs into absolutely adorable examples of the Terriers they are supposed to resemble. Chrissy and Barry followed with broom and cloth to clean up after I made a monumental mess. Together we managed to accomplish a really big job. That is a gift.

Today we worked on a jigsaw puzzle together. We've had it quite a long time and it's one I gave him to go with his Harley Davidson collectible "stuff". I was amazed! He doesn't really like doing these puzzles, it's more fun for me, but he worked diligently and with great patience on it. Funny, I haven't had much time to work on it but I didn't fuss at him for spending a perfectly good Saturday on something so "unproductive". It's Valentine's Day after all!

The best part was when he brought the giant heart shaped cookie he gave me....along with a knife to cut it because he wanted a piece :) I'm happy to share my heart with him along with my cookie :)

We spent the day together, under the same roof, occupied by different and shared projects, meeting in the middle to share gifts that would seem meaningless to most, a kiss or a hug and most importantly a quiet kind of love that doesn't require much in the way of flashy cards, dinners out, or flowers. This is the kind of romance I most treasure.

I hope you had a happy Valentine's Day with the love of your life. Exciting or quiet, lavish or low-key, sexy or just snuggled up, I hope you had a day as wonderful as ours.

NO New Year's Resolutions for me!

Mid-January already? I KNOW! It's impossible that so many days have passed during this New Year and I have yet to come up with even one profoundly insightful conscious thought. LOL! Like that happens so often!

This is one thought I did have. Not profound or thought provoking but a simple statement of fact. I'm not making New Year's Resolutions this year. I always feel like a failure if I don't manage to achieve my goals - no matter how unrealistic they were to begin with.

I already have a list (a mile long) of things I need or want to change or improve upon. Why add more stress to an already stressful situation?

In these times of financial difficulty I can't afford to do everything I want to do. It's difficult even to "spend" time wisely when you're running amuck trying to get everything done and within a budget. I've decided to make a list of things I will try to do.

Here goes...

I will try:

to write in my Blog more often.
to spend more quality time with my family.
to spend less, give more, whine less, and pray more.
to better manage my time, my temper, and my ability to say "No" instead of yes to every request that comes my way.
to take better care of myself so I can be here to enjoy the gifts I've been blessed with.
to listen more and talk less.
to finish one project before beginning another or at least keep my husband from doing this :)
to plan ahead instead flying by the seat of my pants....and this one is especially difficult when my health is not something I can depend on and my brain has a mind of it's own....and not one I'm real familiar with :)
to be ON TIME! Time i.e. clocks are not my friend. I can't seem to get anywhere on time these days. I've always been a bit ditsy because of my ADHD but it has become someone MAGNIFIED since the Meningitis and Staph Infections in my brain.
to NOT berate myself for the changes in my brain that I have no control over....such as an ongoing struggle with time management, lack of visual memory, short term memory loss and the really big one for me.....the ability to use or remember numbers. (Now you know why time is an issue!)
to accept the changes and focus on the things I CAN do well.
to find the purpose God has for my life.
to be the change I want to see in my world.
to take better care of and spend more time with my parents.
to play with my dogs everyday...at least for a minute or two.
to remember to play more and work less...taking a cue from my dogs :)

See, the list goes on and on and on. The only resolution I am making is that I will not make a list of stress producing resolutions. I will only do what I can and leave the rest for next year.

Time is all we have and I'm hoping I have LOTS of it in my future!

So....here's wishing you a Happy 2009!

The year goes out with trip to the Emergency Room!

I thought I would find something constructive to do with my day off today. I've been pretty useless or it seems that way when I'm overwhelmed with a million things to do....

I decided to work on basic stuff around the house while my DH, sweet man that he is, went off to do a bit of home maintanance work for some friends from church.

Have I ever mentioned that my DH is accident prone? Did I mention that today's activity required the use of a circular saw? Oh. Well, I probably should have mentioned that first.

He called me this afternoon sounding a bit stressed and asked me to call the Dr's office....he was on his way and wanted them to know he was coming...he cut his hand. "How bad is it?" I ask. Says he, "Not bad but it's bleeding pretty good so just meet me there."

Okay, after 25 years living with this man I know the signs of shock and denial...he was exhibiting all of them. I met him at the Dr's office (she wouldn't even let hime check in!) and rushed him to the Emergency Room.

His hand actually looked pretty good and didn't appear to be bleeding too bad so I wasn't panicked but there had definitely been some major bleeding involved. Of course, the E.R. is packed to the roof with all kinds of patients suffering all kinds of maladies.

Short story? Four hours later we walked out of the E.R. Barry had all 10 of his fingers but two of them were wearing stitches. His left ring finger only took three stitches to close. The left index finger.....8 stitches to close and that was after a major trim job by the Doc. That finger was pretty mangled. He's very lucky to have it at all!

So, thank heaven for E.R.'s and E.R. Doctors and nurses, all night pharmacies, and pain pills.

Think I'll go to bed and say my prayers and thank God I can still hold my husband's hand in mine.

BTW - didn't get a darned thing accomplished today but I was definitely where I needed to be!

Inspired by an Infant

It's been a long time since I 've had a chance to sit down and just breathe. I was musing over the infant that inspired all of this holiday madness and wondering if He would have wanted us to be going crazy or just remembering Him during this Christmas season. Didn't really have to think too hard on that one. I think He'd rather have us slow down and remember than run amuck and stress out.

Of course thinking of one infant led to thinking of another....I was missing my little Kingsley and decided to put together an Etsy Treasury of things I'd use to keep him warm this winter. Click on the title of this entry and it will link you to a wonderland of warm babies! Enjoy!

This beautiful little bundle is my new grandson. His name is Kingsley James and he was born today. He's the baby boy of my baby boy....now a grown man with a huge heart and "Daddy" written all over him.

He lives a few states away from us. We're in Missouri and he's in Ohio. We can hardly wait to meet him and pass around the hugs and kisses. So, if you are a believer, thank God for bringing our first grandchild into this world with all ten perfect little toes and fingers, his Mommy a fast and safe delivery, and our son the greatest joy he will ever know.

Hey there! I keep saying I'm going to get better at blogging on a regular basis. I still haven't been able to accomplish that feat but I most enjoy blogging when something of note happens.

On July 5Th, I celebrated my 50Th birthday! My husband and I share the birth date although he's a smidgen older. He doesn't like to acknowledge birthdays but I am just the opposite. This has made it a little difficult over the years but he usually wins out and we celebrate quietly.

This year was different. I declared early on that there would be a party celebrating my 50Th year. It was really important to me to celebrate and declare my survival on this momentous day!

I've had a rather interesting and sometime crisis filled life starting with my birth father's death. There was nothing accidental or natural about it. It was pure malice on my birth mother's part and as life would have it...she got away with it. It was an incredibly traumatic experience. Our home life was always turbulent, and quite often violent, and it was for that reason I was not surprised when one did not survive the other. There were seven children in my family, 3 boys and 4 girls. I was the 4Th born and at the age of 5, left in charge of the "little ones". Finally we became wards of the state. We spent time in orphanages and foster homes. We were divided, reunited, then divided again. Eventually were were adopted into several different homes, allowed to visit once or twice a year and then slowly weaned from the pack.

I was adopted into a wonderful Christian home. The only real problem - I was both ADHD and had Reactive Attachment Disorder. Back then there was no diagnosis for these maladies. I was just a "difficult child" and I'm sure my new Mom and Dad were more than a little tempted to disrupt the adoption on several occasions. I was not frilly nor lady like. I had no real concept of "manners" and wanted nothing to do with indoor life or the mixed vegetables that consistently appeared on my dinner plate.

Life was always chaotic and just a shade off kelter. I was smart but not a good student. I was a tomboy but not at all athletic. I had little self confidence and struggled constantly with the belief that one day I would be told the storybook life would never be and would I please just go away and leave these good people alone. That is RAD in all it's glory.

Relationships were never allowed to develop, I pushed others away as soon as I suspected they might actually come to love me or I them. RAD "victims" would rather be alone than risk being hurt or abandoned. It was sadly evident by the time I reached college that I was not "normal" but I had by the ripe old age of 17 developed "coping skills". I was really good at "acting" normal but underneath I just simply wasn't.

By the time I graduated from high school, I had developed a new problem - this time it was a curious string of physical maladies. It was not that I was seriously ill or stricken with a terrible disease. I just seemed to be sick or injured most of the time. I think my parents were a little embarrassed. They just didn't understand how I could be sick so often or so clumsy that I was constantly getting hurt. No explanation was imminent so I went off to college.

College? Well let's just say that is an entirely different blog topic. It was not a great experience. It was not even a good experience. So....let's NOT go there at all. I wasn't successful there and once again disappointed my parents, flitted from one romance to the next avoiding flypaper relationships, and sadly, hurt a lot of people along the way.

There is a pattern here but no one could see it nor could they imagine there could be a connection between all of these events and attitudes. Finally I dropped out of college, attended a tech school, got my certification as a Medical Assistant and moved on into my second stage of life....marriage.

Ouch! "Disastrous" is a kind word for my first marriage. The only blessing was the birth of my son. It was a short lived union and more than a little damaging to my psyche. I have a friend who refers to her first marriage as her "practice or test marriage". That actually makes sense to me. Isn't that a scary thought?!

Eventually I did marry again and this time the marriage lasted. We're celebrating our 25Th Anniversary later this year. We adopted a child 18 years ago - a little girl who managed to develop all of the problems I had as a child of the foster care system and more. The point is we survived - each other and a myriad collection of mishaps and crisis.

Of course, most anyone who has met me in the last few years has knowledge of my "brain events" - the surgeries, infections, etc, etc, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah. Once again I survived.

Are you starting to see a pattern yet? Well it took me a long time but it finally occurred to me that God must have a plan for me that He is just determined to see through because I have been allowed to survive a lot of stuff in this lifetime. He does not now nor has He ever asked my opinion about how my life should unfold and I think it's obvious He isn't going to start now. It's a darned good thing too! I've managed to make a mess of things when I was in charge.

I'm starting to realize that although this is not the life I would have chosen it has been a life I can be proud of. I am not good at the things I expected to excel in and I seem to have found talent in areas I had never even considered optional. I still find myself in chaos and crisis. I think "weird" just follows me around, in fact, I know it does! But none of that matters because I have learned two incredibly important facts in the last fifty years.....it's not about me and I am not in charge! I'm learning daily to enjoy more, worry less, forgive myself and others and most important... step out on the limb of faith and sway in the breeze! So what if I do fall? I've survived worse!

I made this heart as a gift for a friend on Mother's Day. Her girls helped me design it. She has three daughters of her own and three foster daughters.
I wirewrapped the birthstones of her children on the Snow Quartz heart, then added three lengths of chain with the birthstones of the foster children on the ends. It hangs very gracefully on the side. I used the chain to represent the room for love in Laurie's heart and home.
I can add a new birthstone with the addition of each new foster child.

Today has been one of those days spent on the telephone talking to people who tend to aggravate most of us. It's not their fault really, it's the job. I'm talking about insurance CSRs and Doctor's office billing companies, and those places we depend on to do a fast and accurate job with our records or money.

I'm probably a little less patient than others because it's a job I've done in my past and anal little dickens that I am, I took pride in getting it done right the first time and in a timely manner. That's been several years ago now but I still expect the rest of the world to do things in a courteous and professional manner.

I was rather surprised today when the conversations I had with these people were actually very productive. I started this chore of paperwork with great dread only to be happily surprised. Everyone was polite, helpful, and even, in some cases, friendly. I was amazed and grateful.

Sometimes things go our way even when we don't expect them to. Sometimes people surprise us when we are least expecting it. Sometimes the best and only thing to say is "Thank You!"
